August 20th to 25th, 2023 – Washington, D.C. became the hub for nuclear energy experts and enthusiasts as the NURETH-20 conference unfolded. Amidst this major nuclear science event, GO-VIKING proudly showcased its dedication to advancing safety in nuclear power plants through extensive research on Flow-Induced Vibration (FIV) phenomena.

Despite the tightly packed agenda of the NURETH-20 conference, the conference featured two dedicated sessions closely related to GO-VIKING and its predecessor, VIKING. During these two sessions, a total of eight presentations were delivered, all by passionate participants of the GO-VIKING project. This substantial presence not only highlighted the project’s significance but also reaffirmed its commitment to nuclear safety.

RECOGNIZING EXCELLENCE

It was a moment of pride for GO-VIKING as one of its contributions earned the prestigious Best Paper Award at the conference. This acknowledgment underscores the project’s dedication to cutting-edge research in FIV and its profound impact on enhancing the safety of nuclear power plants. This award was specifically given for the paper “Development of an Anisotropic Pressure Fluctuation Model for the Prediction of Turbulence-Induced Vibrations of Fuel Rods” written by K. Zwijsen, N. van den Bos, E.M.A. Frederix, F. Roelofs, and A.H. van Zuijlen. The scientific work for this paper was performed at the NRG facilities within as part of the GO-VIKING project and was led by the project’s co-coordinator K. Zwijsen. The developed method allows fast, but still accurate simulation of FIV. The paper describes the developed method that enables rapid yet precise simulations of FIV, contributing significantly to our understanding of the subject matter.

The GO-VIKING sessions drew substantial attention, with an average attendance of about 25 people. Engaging discussions ensued after the presentations, fostering an exchange of ideas and insights among experts in the field. Many attendees expressed interest in staying informed about the project’s progress, highlighting the value GO-VIKING brings to the nuclear energy community.
